Caterpillar has two different types of undercarriage, an all rubber track on the Multi Terrain Loader and a combination steel and rubber track on the Compact Track Loader. The choice between the two types will depend on your applications and some of the features that may be important to you such as ride and operator comfort, traction, flotation, and operating cost. Your Caterpillar dealer will be a great resource to help you make this decision. You can use this link to locater your dealer if you aren't already doing business with them. Thanks for your question about Cat machines.

I have used both the Cat 259 and 299 size compact track loader machines and can recommend both highly. In determining which one is right for you, I would ask, do i plan to use any high flow attachments. If so you should probably consider the 299 with high flow capabilities. If high flow is not needed, the 259 will perform excellent in any grading, excavating or standard flow application.

If I'm not mistaken you are referring to the 7 Series (257, 267 etc) and the 9 series (259, 299 etc)
I just bought a 259B3 and am very happy after doing alot of research and asking various contractors.
IMHO the 7 series is for landscapers and others who are working on relatively flat and level ground.
The 9 series is much more robust and capable of working on steeper slopes etc.
Just make sure to get one with the triple idlers on the front and back. They are worth the cost if you plan on working in that kind of environment!
