Smaller Engines – more powerful, more fuel efficient, lower maintenanc e costs
Customers are demanding more output with less fuel consumption, while meeting emissions compliance. Future licensing requirements and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are demanding the economical use of fuel. When we consider the increase in fuel costs in coming years, it’s become even more interesting to think about the horsepower-to-vessel weight relationships. The other option is to change our habits in moving ourselves and goods around the world.
New ship designs, as well as engine technology, allow owners and builders to break new ground. In the past, standard engine types were established for defined applications; today, new ship designs and efficient turbochargers could allow for smaller engine bores in larger ships.
What considerations are required when designing in a smaller engine for your vessel?
