I have a 38 ft. Rampage with twin 510hp c-9's..  Have been having trouble getting up on plane recently.   Significant amounts of black smoke when I throttle up... Have had props redone and they are fine.  Cat engine maintenance in November, valves adjusted and all ws fine... engines are 06 with 500 hours each.   wondering if it could be a fuel or load problem.  Any ideas?

Black smoke sometime cause by clogging of fuel filter, bad injectors, FIP problem...anyway, what about the overall parameters? it still normal?

Lack of air or overloading, Check air filters, turbo condition, wastegates, check for aftercooler blockage or exhaust restriction. Check engine load on your MPD under acceleration, if it reads 100% before you get to full RPM you may be overloading them, check hull condition, make sure your trim tabs aren't stuck down, have you added weight to the boat recently? when was the last oil change? HEUIs are very sensative to oil condition. if your hitting 100% load early record the RPM and boost at that speed to check against see trail data.

Thanks for your help... Checked last wknd, not overloaded on Mpd... Really feels like a turbo issue..   The port engine kicks in and is way ahead of starboard engine in RPM and Fuel consumption... Once I finally get on plane, the engines run WNL.. Have scheduled a CAT TECH to ride with me to see if he can figure it out..

Certain C-9 models had  HEUI pump issues. The chroming from a bearing inside the HEUI pump gets fed through the system and wipes out the injectors. If you feel like it is a turbo problem, then you should check shaft endplay and compressor and turbine housings for scoring.

we know C-9 is an electronic engine, it's designed to black smoke-free. I'm not sure if air filter clogged, turbo failure, or something problem in air intake and exhaust system components as the root cause of your problem. Boost pressure sensor installed to avoid black smoke problem, ECM use boost pressure to calculate injection duration. So i'm not sure if the problem caused by air induction system (mechanical system).

My opinion, the root cause maybe come from Injector or Boost Pressure Sensor. Please check these components.

I agree, the FRC fuel limit will prohibit the engine to smoke, might be the HEUI pump and injectors, check injection actuation pressure and perform HEUI test. There is an PIP out on some of the C7 C9 engines concerning the HEUI pump failing.

I suggest start with your values in the ECM, then you can find out if the problem are in the injectors. Temperatures are also important, maybe if the fuel is black something in the combustion is wrong. Also take care with the admision air, check it. Please informe us if how it was in your engine. What S/N is it?

I have had this issue on my C12's. After repitching the props on advice from RingPower, then paying lots of dollars for diagnostics, I found the exhaust riser for the port  engine was leaking (actually shooting) raw water exhaust back up toward the turbo. After replacing the riser and the turbo, cleaning the exixting starboard turbo, I have no more black smoke and great acceleration.

I HAVE SEEN THIS MANY TIMES ON SEVERAL ENGINES.  IF THE PROBLEM IS SLOW TO TURN UP FROM THE START OF THE TORQUE CURVE UNTIL AROUND 1700 RPM'S.  THE TURBO HOT HOUSING IS CRACKED AT THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP OF THE TURBO AS THE EXHAUST HITS THE TURBINE WHEEL.  THIS CAN ONLY BE SEEN BY REMOVING THE CARTRIAGE AND INSPECTING THE INSIDE OF THE HOUSING.  THERE WILL BE A CRACK RUNNING FROM THE END OF THE RAMP BACK DOWN.  IT WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 1/2 INCH LONG.  THIS CAUSES TURBO LAG.
