Engine 3126 (420hp)
1400 hours
My temperature gauge reaches normal temp (180) then quickly bouces within 5 degrees. Also noticed the temp cool to 170/160, which leads me to believe the thermostat is bad.
Where is the thermostat located? And is replacing this a simple job? or CAT tech required? Do I need to drain the coolant level first?

The temp regulator is under the coolant hose neck on top right side of engine. You'll need to drain at least enough coolant to get the level below the regulator housing. Fairly easy job. New regulator is 190F. This would also be a good time to have the heat exchanger cleaned.
