CAT 3412 Engine Alignment with Generator SR4B

Gentlemen , i am chief engineer onboard support vessel  . We are doing bottom overhaul - CAT 3412 Generator engine . After assembly engine block with crankshaft & piston assembly , new thrust brgs  measured end play 0.35mm - satisfactory . After coupling to Generator ( Caterpillar SR4B ) tried to measure the end play , unable to see any play in the crank shaft .  We dont have drawing for SR4B Generator cross section . Does SR4B generator have axial play  like engine axial(end) play . What could be the reason . We are still working on it . Please guide me .

Thanks

Re: CAT 3412 Engine Alignment with Generator SR4B

Hi

From my experience the SR4 does have axial end play depending two ways depending wether you have a single bearing or 2 bearing generator.

Single bearing  the bearing slides in the end bell and there should be more than enough to accomodate crankshaft end play. If not the housing where the bearing rides could be worn or it is fill of dirt or dried grease.

The actual reference to zero is adjusted by the flex plates.

The 2 bearing generator has only the amount of space in the coupler for end play. Of course this is determine on weather it is close coupled or not.

Your dealer should be able to get you alignment instructions.

Hope this answers some questions

Add or subtract shim plates between the flexplate and the rotor shaft to regain the crankshaft end play.

if you have correct crank end play the flexplate coupling to the flywheel should compensate end play
