Marine Engine

I am looking to buy a 70 foot boat which has I am told twin cat 441 engines.  The boat is 90 ton displacment steel hull built 1989.  Before I get to see the vessel and have it surveyed and engines chesked etc.  Can anybody tell me what a 441 engine is, is it 442 cubic inch ?  Also interested in what kind of fuel consumption would one expect at 12 knot cruise speed.  Finally as the boat is in Europe wouls spares still be available for such 20 year old motors.

Thanks

Re: Marine Engine

I'm guessing you are on the right track that its a 442 cu in engine.  I used to have a boat with a pair of 3116 cats in her, and those were right around 400 cu in, so you may be looking at something like 3126, which i'm pretty sure cat doesn't build anymore (which is too bad becasue they were a good engine).  You might check out the cat website http://marine.cat.com - i've been out there a few times and they've added spec information for what they call legacy engines - the ones they don't make anymore.  this could be a start for you.

Re: Marine Engine

I would recheck that model number as there is no 441 in the line up. Current or Legacy.

The fuel consumption would have to be determined during a trial or by getting an estimate from the boat builder; there are too many variables with the hull, props and other efficiencies to estimate from a purely engine point of view.

Good luck!

Re: Marine Engine

There is a legacy engine D342 for which spares are available in Euro stock

Re: Marine Engine

What you describe could also be a 3408, an 8 cylinder Vee engine that had a horsepower rating of 441BHP @ 1800 RPM. Depending what the boat was designed to fish for, that would sound in the right range.  In my area they used the S/N prefix of 99U. Are they an 8 cylinder Vee?
