After running the ship around and then pulling into the pier, if I just let her idle at the pier she smokes quite a bit - was wondering would this be related to cooling down and would the installation of amot valves reduce the smoking, with higher raw water/jacket water temps? Rather than just coming to a stop at idle and cooling with water that is 50 degrees. 3508B Marine engines, and ideas or offers?

What color is the smoke?

Black or brown smoke is an indication of bad combustion indicating an issue with a turbo or a fouled injector

Blue smoke is an indication of burning oil which could be caused by leaking valve guides, broken piston rings or a leaking oil seal in the turbocharger

White smoke is an indication of a cold engine or water making it's way into the hot exhaust and flashing into steam

I see you mentioned that the water temperature is 50C is this indicated on your monitoring panel as jacket water temperature??

If yes the engine goes back to cold mode which is activated below 63C, normal idling temperature with a hot engine should be 80C.

Another option is to place oil seals on the exhaust valve stems this to remove the oil which otherwise goes into your exhaust and burns causing a little bit of dirty smoke.
