I had both alternators fail indepentently between 200-250 hours. I thought it may have been because the battery charger was not sensing properly. I replaced it and the batteries. I thought it was ok until my starboard one died again at about another 250 hours. I am beginning to believe the original alternators are not heavy enough as the voltage drops to 9v during the engine heating cycle. Can I replace the original 51 amp one with a higher ouput one and if so how many amps can I go to without having to replace the existing wiring?

Its been a while, but there was a 12 Volt 105 amp alternator available on some 3126B's, would need serial number to confirm all that would be needed, Best would be to contact your local Cat dealer for help with any parts needed as mount will need to be changed too.
