About to install new injectors in a 3116 engine, first work on engine since new. Must the copper injector sleeves reworked before installing new injectors WITHOUT the small O-ring at the bottom end of the injector cone?
yes you are right . According to the tool operating manual , it is mentioned clearly that you should not use the seal-o-ring at the tip of the injector.
Ok, I dont have a 173-1530 and a 143-2099 tool group, not yet any way. But must the sleeves be reamed to accomodate the injector without the o-ring, even if the sleeves are without pitting and carbon etc? Thanx
The 173-1530 injector seating tool group procedure assumes that the sleeves are new but not reamed. Now in your case , for existing sleeves , as the procedure of the tool says , that the sleeves can be reamed for clean up only if necessary , and should be installed without the small o-ring. So you dont have to ream in order to place the injector without the o-ring. Ream only for cleanup if necessary and install the injectors without the o-ring.
The 173-1530 seating tool is for injectors with the new-style cone, which has a rather sharp sealing surface. This style injector leaves a thin line impression in the sleeve. If you have the older style injectors, I'd recommend reaming the sleeves. The injector tip seal is always removed. I'd also recommend use of the stronger hold-down bolt and washer (1395925 and 9X8267).
