Marine 3116 leaking injectors

HI, I have a 3116 that compression is leaking to the diesel and I want to know if the older style injectors (model 4p2233) can be re-sited without the o-ring using the 173-1530 injector seating tool, if not what is the correct procedure? Thank you.

Re: Marine 3116 leaking injectors

The injector seating tool does not work correctly with the older style injector cone. The best repair would be to replace the injectors with the newer style, along with the new stronger hold-down bolt and washer (139-5925 and 9X8267), using the seating tool to press the injectors into the sleeves.

Thank you for the response. Money is tight know and the injectors are working fine, do I just replace the o-rings? What will be the correct steps for use the injectors I have? Thank you for your time.

Re: Marine 3116 leaking injectors

If not replacing the injectors, then the injector seats must be reamed until seating area is smooth. Do not install the tip seal on the injector but use the new hold-down bolt and washer.

Re: Marine 3116 leaking injectors

Thank you, so after reaming the seat there is no need of using the seating tool?  Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure. Again thank you for your time and patience.

Re: Marine 3116 leaking injectors

You can use the seating tool with old style injectors but it's not as effective. Older style injector cones sealed in the sleeve on a 2-3MM wide area of the cone. Newer injectors have a cone with a very narrow, rather sharp lip for a sealing area. The seating tool actually forces this sharp lip into the sleeve and creates a very good compression seal. The o-ring is removed from the tip as it was found to actually prevent the cone from sealing in the sleeve. Follow the instructions with the seating tool and do not torque the injector hold-down bolt with the seating tool holding pressure on the injector.
