320 DL Black smoke

Hi everyone.

I need help and advice

I have a 07 320 DL, Recently its got very smokey at full rev even when the engine isnt labouring.

Its the early yellow ram cat/mitsubushi engined 320

It has 4800 hrs,

I have owned it from new and serviced it regulary,

Has new diesel and air filters,

Intercooler and intake pipes and joints are all ok,

It still runs and sounds fine,

At 1500 hrs it did the same,

The dealers McCormack McNaughton removed the injector pump and injectors they told me they couldnt find any faults with the pump or injectors but when it was rebuilt it when perfect until now again.

Has anyone ever came across this before? I understand that these things can happen but surely not twice under 5000 hrs.

Did you check the turbo?  I would still lean towrd the fuel system, they are very picky and do seem to have problems.

Re: 320 DL Black smoke

It is a very common problem and for the machines around here CAT's "solution" is the use of fuel additive to help reduce carbon build up on the injectors.

A more hillbilly approach is having it on full throttle and under load, while adding water to the air intake, the water when vaporised helps clean the carbon build up.

Re: 320 DL Black smoke

Black smoke is caused by too much fuel or lack of sufficient air to combust properly. Make sure you have good clean airflow that isnt restricted by anything other than the factory filters. Governor timing can also cause over/under fueling but usually isnt a common problem. My questions would be the following

1. Do you use new air filters? Dont use filters that have been cleaned, even professionally

2. Has the injection pump timing been checked and verified to be accurate?

3. Does the CFM rating on the replaced injectors match whats required for the engine specs?

4. Has the turbo compressor turbine been checked for damage?

It's just the way they are, what you can do to improve the situation is to remove the injectors and clean them and change the pump timing so it is a few deegres earlier, this will help against carbon buildup and also give you a bit better fuelusage and power.

This only applies if you have the early 320Dwith the mechanical injectionpump, not common rail system.
