Hello, We have a CAT 3508B engine, which was operated to 1800 rpm, it was coupled to an electric generator. Now, the same is used in conjunction with a water pump of a fire network and operates at 1500 RPM. Does anyone know if neccesary change the turbo compressors due to change the speed from 1800 to 1500 RPM?
Regards

Actually depends on how much power you're trying to pull out of it. Technically you took an electric set engine which is considered a constant speed engine and now are using it in an industrial variable speed application. If you want best performance and fuel consumption you'll likely need to change the turbo's and possibly the injectors as well.
Your best action is to consult your local dealer, provide your serial and arrangement numbers, and information on your new driven load (provide your pump curve), he can then match up the best industrial engine rating and let you know the feasibility of converting the engine. Likely he'll also need to know if you need to meet any air quality regulations.
Hope that helps, Mike L.
