Sorry, but you need to provide a bit more detail to get a realistic answer.
What engine model do you have? A 3500 series, 3600 or what?
Are you looking for a conversion to spark ignition or a dual fuel configuration?
What is application? Prime, standby, island mode, peaking, what?
What is the fuel makeup?
Any emissions restrictions?

Syngas generally has a high percentage of Hydrogen. This is difficult to burn in an recip Engine and hence will derate quite a lot. This is because hydrogen burns very fast and hence getting a good flame prorogation is difficult. Some field conversions have been done using a Diesel engine but the success rate is very low. The best suited is a Spark ignited Engine and that too with derate. If you could get the composition of the Syngas we can study which would be the suitable Engine..

i test some engine with syngas in dual action, diesel base mecchanical device, but is realy hard, we have prj to try with electronic device engine small power, in italy is realy reguested, regards

YES BUT 60% GAS AND 40% DIESEL
NEEDS COMPLETE GAS STREET .SAME AS USED IN GAS ENGINE AND AFTER GAS STREET GAS IS DIRECT INJECTED IN AIR FILTER HOUSINGS
B4 TURBO CHARGERS AND ALSO ELECCTRICALLY CONTROL GAS SHUTT OFF VALVE WHEN ENGINE IS STOPPED.
AND IF YOUR GAS HAVE SULFER MORE THAN 05% THAN YOUR AFTER COOLER CORE MY CAN DAMAGE EARLY .
NEEDS FUEL INJECTOR TIMING RETIRE ACCORDING TO YOUR GAS BTU AND HIT AND TRIAL METHOD.
EPG WILL START AT DIESEL AND IN FEW SECOND GAS SHOULD BE ON . ACCORDING TO LOAD GAS SHOULD BE INCREASED
VIA ELECTRICALLY CONTROLED ,

we have an second PRJ to use HEUI injection and gas inlet to venturi by electrical controll, (motortech device) engine base is the faboluose 3412 sita, the point is to found good gas quality, higth level of idrogen not big deal, we controll by temperacture is one esample, in Italy many tri to do this via, problem is to have serius patner and good gas reactor, ciao a tutti Claudio

Could you elaborate on your comments regarding de-rate from blending syngas and diesel? We are considering this with a CAT 3608 and syngas with the following characteristics:
CO - 22%
H2 - 21%
CH4 - 2.5%
CO2 - 10.5%
N2 - 43%
(1% ethylene, propylene, benzene)
Any guidance you can provide on the maximum syngas to diesel ratio and the de-rate that you would expect as a result would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

realy good gas, for dual operation i thing it is possible go to 30% diesel and 70% ga, but need some improvement on turbine sistem and Water cooler inprove with doble stage, for total gas operation need a lot and bigest reactor for produce syngas, is possible ??????, 3600 series is good engine, but syngas need 1to1,5 mixer gas, regards Gordini

Do you know of anyone who has tried to inject hydrogen to a diesel generator with success?
What are some typical downfalls of mixing hydrogen with diesel?

Yes there are some Diesel Engines that have been run with Wood Pyrolysis gas, which is similar to that you have mentioned. There is no standard formula for Gas vs Diesel mix in the Engine.. It depends on the site conditions and also on the gas.. There are standard dual fuel conversion kits in the market. Also remember that a 3608 Diesel is a 13.5:1 CR and this is very high for Gas combustion and hence the Engine will derate.. From my experience even a 11.3:1 1.6 MW Spark ignited engine treated to almost 1.0 MW for Syngas.. Typically we see 50-60% derates on the Engines.. I would expect same for the 3608 diesel.. These conversions are typically done by market specialists in this field and profile of one such person in Europe is attached.. Personally I would think it would be better to have a new Spark ignited Engine for this application..
If it is Wood Pyrolisis gas one of the major issues is Tar.. We have seen very high Tar deposits on the engines with wood pyrolysis.. You need to know what is the process used in pyrolysis (downdraft or updraft).. The process determines that amount of tar in the gas..
Hope this will be useful.. If you need any further information please feel free to send me a mail @ Srivatsa_M_K@cat.com..
