Paralleling Gensets

Hi everyone, I am new to this blog and fairly green when it comes to Diesel power generation. I am trying to connect a CDVR and two Basler SSR63-12 Voltage regulators for crosscurrent compensation paralleling. I currently have 3 gensets all using the Basler SSR63-12 connected in a cross current compensation configuration. I am upgrading  one of the gensets to a CAT C15 which is equipped with a CDVR. My question is, can a CDVR be connected with two Basler 63-12 voltage regulators for crosscurrent compensation paralleling? If so can anyone please explain how to accomplish this.

Also, does anyone out there know the Basler p/n for the CAT equiped CDVRs? Thanks in advance.

Re: Paralleling Gensets

Get in touch with your local dealer and get a copy of the CDVR manual for the genset.  It may be able to assist you with your project.  Maybe someone can PDF for you and post it in a PM as well.  But I would start with getting a copy of the CDVR book and see if that assists you.

Be sure to give the dealer the serial number of the genset for reference.

Re: Paralleling Gensets

Yes the CDVR will work with the Basler SSR's

There is no Basler equivalent to the CDVR (even though it is a Basler) closest Basler equivalent is close to double the price. CDVR is a good buy, I use it on non cat units with great results. The SSR is also a great regulator

Get yourself a copy of the CDVR manual and you will find it is the same wiring as the SSR . Basically wire the CT's in series and provide a 52b contact to short out the droop CT circuit to the regulator when the gen is off line.

Hope this gets you one step closer

Re: Paralleling Gensets

Go to the Basler website and download this,

http://www.basler.com/downloads/VR_parallel.pdf

On about page 16 there is an example diagram of a cross current connection, use it as a starting point.  The SSR's and the CDVR have a slight difference in how the actually droop to reactive power, and since you adjust it with a pot on the SSR's and use the software for the CDVR you may need to make some minor adjustments.

You may also find that the default CDVR settings result in it responding way faster that the SSR's, when I parallel CDVR's with another type AVR i usually drop the loop gain down to 10 or even 5, depends on you installed loads and other system dynamics.

Hope that helps, Mike L.

Re: Paralleling Gensets

Most modern controllers do not require cross-connecting CT's anymore. The measure the actual VARs in the machine and adjust the field current to compensate. If you parallel CT's, then use a 52a contact to short out the one that is off line, that shorts out all CT's connected in parallel...Mike is right, you will need to drop the response time. The new CDVRs are much faster and use forcing. The end result could be a sluggish system.

Maybe you should replace all the regulators with modern digital regulators of the same type? That might  give you the best overall power system? I have tried to safe a few bucks only to get bit in the long run.

I also suggest you call Basler's tech support. They are fantastic. (and this comes from a competitior! We don't make AVR's, but we do compete in the genset control market.)   They will certainly have some vaulable suggestions. If you get Larry, tell him Steve says hi!

Good luck

Steve
