Powering Smaller islands

I would be happy if some detailed information are posted for powering Islands with Gensets that needs to be run continuously.
The average connected load would be about 2 MW in peak time and about 60% during non peak time.Details like sizing of Gensets,Fuel options,CHP option economics,standby rating to the main unit,etc can be posted.
I also would like more learning about Barge mounted Power units and its relevance in todays 'Power On Demand' situations.

hello,this is alebraz-energy,from brazil,i have long time expierence in power generation
nowadays,in this situation its difficult to state fuels,prices,and many things because of the aktual ,financial situation,but in general:
small ilands mean,simple life,maybe not very skilled people,no good budget ,and other things like this,--who pays the bill at least?
2 MW,peak load,1,3 MW part load,
2 x gensets with about 2.2- 2.5 MW each should be selectet,in order to meet future demands,to run always on lower load,appr.85 %,and to save recources,
fuel:is the supply of DO,or HFO,easy,or complicatet?how about the price?
normally such gensets require HFO,but that means more equipment,and more work,and more spares,so verify the situation,dieseloil is more easy,but normally cost more....in each case use separation of the fuel,separation of the luboil,and so on
and verify the use of power take of,MAN,has good options for combined units,but others as well...
and of course,the case of heating ,in case of using HFO,is also a relevant question,so finally its nessecary to pick up first all importent parameters,datas,and if the area is preparet for ancoring,mooring of barges,than pack everything on a barge,and travel through the world
selling power on demand,aktually its a big buiseness ,because for instence,here in south amerika ,is a lot of power missing,we have over here in amazonas not sufficient power,because of faulty power politiks
power barges are very common to meet fast demands ,and they can be build more fast than solid power stations
so far ,so good,

Dear Ananth,
While deciding the power for small islands there are 2 issues that need to be considered..
Firstly the logistics of fuel transportation and fuel storage posibilities. thsi will dictate the type of fuel to be used.
Secondly the reliability required for the power.. The unit sizing will depend upon this.
Going by the requirement of 2 MW peak looks to be quite a small island and hence would have logistics problems for fuel storage.
In most island applications Diesel is the way to go in terms of logistics and economics.
Your load pattern is 2 MW peak power and 1.3 MW off peak power. What you need to consider is that at off peak you have one unit running at 80- 85% load. Whaich would mean the sizing would be multiples of 1500 - 1600 KW Prime power rated gensets.. The load factor of 80-85% is important as we will get maximum fuel efficiencies at these loads and is also the load factor suggested for a prime power set..
For the current application would suggest you select 3 units of 1500 KW Prime Power rated sets.. During the peak demand time you will have 2 units running in parallel. The 3 units is selected so that you have the reserve for maintanence.. the 3 units can be cycled in terms of hours..
Regarding barge mounted units you can provide a barge for the 3 units. There are other options of containerized solutions also which would eliminate the need for constructing a power house..
